DUO Frequently Asked Questions

Why do we have to use Cisco-DUO?

The Gramm Leach Bliley Act (GLBA) is a law that applies to financial and higher education institutions and includes privacy and information security provisions that are designed to protect consumer financial data. The GLBA states that organizations must protect customer data under their care, specifically the 2022 Safeguards Rule that was implemented on December 9, 2022.
This law applies to how higher education institutions collect, store, and use student financial records containing personally identifiable information. GLBA regulations include both a Privacy Rule and a Safeguards Rule, both of which are enforced by the Federal Trade Commission for higher education institutions.

Does installing the Duo Mobile app give up control of my phone?

No.
Duo Mobile has no access to change settings on your phone.
Duo Mobile cannot read your emails, it cannot see your browser history.
It requires your permission to send you notifications.
Duo Mobile cannot remotely wipe your phone.

Even when the “12-hour” box is checked, we still must use Duo to get back into our systems throughout the day.
Why is this?

You removed your computer from its docking station, moving it from wired to wireless network.
Every time you change networks, you have to re authenticate with DUO.

I have a limited data plan, or I don’t have access to Wi-Fi or cellular coverage. Are there alternatives?

Yes. You can use the Duo Mobile app to display a code to log in. The app will work on a smart phone even if you have no cell service or Wi-Fi coverage. When you log in, choose “Enter a Pass code.” Then open the Duo Mobile app, tap the HU Hawk logo and enter the pass code shown.

Do we have to use the “offline feature?”  Can we disable it so we can use our computer independently if the power or Internet is out?
